This picture was taken on February 2016, which shows that Australia's Great Barrier Reef has now turned mostly white. All but 7% of the World Heritage Site has been hit by mass bleaching. The phenomenon takes place when the water is too warm, and mildly bleached coral can recover if the temperature drops. Otherwise, the coral dies. Scientists believe that the cause of mass bleaching is climate change. Scientists estimate that close to 50% of the coral is already dead or dying.
